5 Electrical Safety Tips Every Homeowner Should Know
When it comes to your home, safety starts behind the walls.
Most of us don’t think about our electrical systems until something goes wrong—but by the time there’s a burning smell, a tripped switch, or a faulty outlet, the risk is already there. As electricians working across the Sunshine Coast, we’ve seen firsthand how easy it is for small issues to turn into big problems.
Here are five key ways to keep your home safe, energy-efficient, and compliant:
1. Don’t ignore flickering lights or tripping powerIf your lights are dimming when the kettle’s on or your switchboard keeps tripping, it’s not just annoying—it could be a sign of overloaded circuits or faulty wiring. These are early warnings worth acting on.
2. Know where your switchboard is—and what it doesYour switchboard is the control centre of your home’s electrical system. If it’s old, overloaded, or missing safety switches (RCDs), it might not protect you in an emergency. A modern switchboard can literally save lives.
3. DIY isn’t worth the riskWe get it—YouTube makes everything look easy. But electrical work is one area where DIY can be dangerous and illegal. Always use a licensed electrician. Even changing a light fitting can carry risk if not done properly.
4. Test your safety switchesYou should test your RCD safety switches every three months by pressing the ‘test’ button. If the power doesn’t trip, it’s time to call us. Regular testing ensures they’ll actually work when you need them to.
5. Don’t overload power boardsToo many appliances plugged into one board can cause overheating or fire. Use power boards with built-in surge protection, and avoid piggybacking plugs. If you’re running out of outlets, we can install more safely.
Bonus Tip: Schedule an electrical safety checkIf your home is over 20 years old, or you’ve just moved in, it’s a great idea to get a licensed electrician to do a full safety inspection. We’ll look at wiring, switches, smoke alarms, and more—making sure your home is safe and up to standard.
